As I Think We Could Do With A Break From "Matt Smith! OMG!"

To burble a little further on this entry about cosplaying.

Previously, I admitted to feeling self-conscious and just a tad dorky as a person walking the halls in a costume. This is ironic because, back in the days when I would attend any event with LARP in the description (I was a bit indiscriminate) I never felt self-conscious in whatever costume I'd put together - and I'd put together some corkers, I assure you. Therefore, I can't help reaching the conclusion that playing a character takes the edge off my self-consciousness and/or lets me displace it entirely because it's not me in the funky outfit, so to speak.

(Let's leave the psychology of that for another day, shall we...?)

Or maybe it's simply that having more to "do" - keeping up a character - takes my mind off the there's every chance I look like a doofus factor. That's entirely possible, too.

So, yeah, maybe I'll try packing my RP skills along with the costumes, in future. Mind you, for original concepts/inside jokes such as Generic Time Agent and Lucy!Master, that'll no doubt baffle people - more so than I usually do, I mean. Ah, well...

(No, I am not going to throw together an impromptu LARP for the cosplayers of Gallifrey One, so don't even ask!)

You've looked great in all the costumes I've seen you in... both in pics, and in person.

Aw, thankyer. It's nice to know you think I look alright - how I sometimes feel, though, is something totally other!

I understand that feeling part as I have that also, and its more than look alright. :P

I think you look great, beautiful and sexy.

Still interested...

pretty sure it was you that mentioned something about a LARP based on West Wing.

Wasn't that you? (oy too tired to make sense right now).

Yep, that's me. Alex and I are working on the idea, now, but it's going to be at least six months before we run anything.

The current notion is that it'll play out in three parts, starting out in 2012 with the (original, not Sorkin-canon) characters at the national convention, fighting out who's going to get the nomination now that Santos' terms are done. As for the second and third parts... you'll find out. :)

Oh very cool.

Looking forward to seeing how you handle the background of the Santos administration.

I have to go back and watch the last season again since I don't know if they ever mentioned in the story line about how they would handle the nomination of Leo's successor since he passed on (real life and in the series).

playing a character takes the edge off my self-consciousness and/or lets me displace it entirely because it's not me in the funky outfit, so to speak.

And this is why I love drama so; I can be someone else. When I have to stand up as me (and make a speech or whatever) I get really nervous because I feel exposed, and can only handle it by pretending I'm a lecturer or professor-someone other than me.

*nod*

I can quite understand that POV.

Now, if the idea of playing someone else's character didn't feel quite so much like *theft*, I'd probably have no qualms about it at all - and probably have a fair bit of fun!

The acting I've done has been in plays, not trying to be a character from a fandom, so it's a bit different; I am interpreting the character my way, not trying to copy the mannerisms and speech of another actor in a role. So yeah, I see what you mean. I could dress as Vila (but wouldn't, being the wrong shape), but I don't think I'd have a hope of acting him seeing I can't even get my eyebrows to move the way his do. I can do the voice intonation and that's about it.

The only fannish RPing I've done is on-line games with others on LJ; all I have to get right is the written dialogue. :-)

*grins* I agree, that does make it a lot easier, doesn't it?

I'll never, ever be able to pull off a Harkness crossplay in the halls of a convention (as much as I might love to!) but I think I'm a pretty dab hand with his turn of phrase... ;)

*laughs*

Fair point!
