Smith and Jones - Further Thoughts
Some further thoughts about Smith And Jones beyond "Ooh, pretty!"
I'd like it if there was some indication of how much time has passed for the Doctor since The Runaway Bride but I know that it's too much to expect such specifics. Undefined grey areas are a desperate writers' boon and who knows what desperation lurks ahead?
Speaking of desperation, it's rather sweet and sad how much the Doctor clearly likes Martha and wants her to join him, but is simultaneously trying to keep her at arm's length. Classic get-away-closer behavior of the emotionally shell-shocked-but-still-needy type. Someone on LJ-land referred to his behavior as stalker-like when it came to him pursuing/persuading Martha to come along, and I think that person had a point. Stalkers can have their nicer moments too, I suppose. Let's just hope he isn't planning to chain her to the console when she tries to leave - and oh dear god, I apologize for making that into a fic-reality - as per the Shrodinger Rules of Fanfiction1. So, yeah, the Doctor's a bit conflicted - lonely as hell, but scared of having his heart broken again. How delightfully human. And, okay, it makes my inner romantic giggle in delight, I admit it
As I've mentioned earlier, I'm liking Martha more than I anticipated, and I'm greatly relieved by that. She's got the obligatory sense of adventure and wonder (because a companion who hides under the bed makes for poor television, granted) but she's not saccharine with it. I fear that hint of scepticism that we saw is doomed (viz. how quickly she went from Doctor is a title you've got to earn to, well, calling him Doctor) because RTD just can't help himself with his own personal Mary Sue, bless his silly little heart. I hope I'm wrong, though, as a bout of Rose Redux will be both boring and disappointing. Let's have some variety!
Enough about the characters. I'm sure I'll be wibbling on about them enough in the next couple of months.
The story was a good setup. A mixture of very familiar settings and SFish, with a good dollop of primal fear thrown in. Substitute terrorists for Judoon and you've got something that's going to unnerve a viewer - and I think that the Judoon rampaging through the hospital evoked that same sort of feeling as a home invasion would. It was a great setting.
I wish the Judoon had been re-invented Sontarans, though. Violent vigilantes for hire is a role that would have suited them, methinks - wheras in the classic series I feel they suffer from being a bit too like the Daleks, with the whole conquer-the-universe motif - but if RTD wanted rhinos, then rhinos he shall have. For what it's worth, I thought they looked pretty good, although I'd be happier if RTD let got of the take a Terran animal and alienize it thing. I understand that it gives the kiddies a visual reference to latch on to, but the adults around my way are getting a bit bored of it. This is the downside of the show now having an amazing budget and a huge creative team - viewers get their hopes up and we start getting picky. Why, back in the day, the monsters were guys in bubblewrap and we liked it that way.
Uh. I mean... Er. Where was I?
Overall, I think this was a much better season-opener than New Earth - I'll admit that they'll have to go a long way to beat Rose. Unfortunately, the trailer for the upcoming story left me cold, which is a shame as I usually quite enjoy the historicals (well, the classic-era ones, Tooth and Claw and that Dickensian mess of the past two seasons also left me a bit cold. I'll have to think on that) but, as ever, I'm willing to give it a chance.
And, quick note to the producer(s) of the Confidentials. Okay, okay, we get it. The Doctor kissed someone. Yes, it was unexpected and rather cute but, dammit, there was no-need to keep going back to the shot, no matter how much of a favorite it's proven to be with the icon-makers.
1 - by speculating if, say, Sontaran/Dalek slash exists, it immediately manifests somewhere in the world. I can't take credit for naming the syndrome, nor can I deny that it exists.

I know I've not done a response post for this (bad fangrrl) but it hardly seems worth it when you pretty much capture most of my thoughts.
(hive mind anyone?)
