Torchwood, 2x10 - From Out Of The Rain

As usual, a gut-reaction post and spoilers abound.

Cue: film-wonk mode, Eee! Flatbed editor luv!

Ooh, nice old-school spooky intro there.

Is it me, or does the exterior of the Electro Cinema look an awful lot like a gussied-up fire station? A very nicely gussied-up fire station, mind you...

(although I'm with Ianto re: old-cinema-luv. I don't get out to The Castro Theater nearly often enough)

(as Ianto sees Jack)...and there goes another fic idea I had in the pipeline. Dammit. I gotta start wearing the tinfoil helmet more often.

Hm, some honestly creepy bits going on here - although the 'no supernatural' rule is again being throw out of the window, it seems. Yeah, yeah, it's the rift - just not quite how I expected it to be used, y'know?

(Of course, mental comparisons to the creepiest carnival-based tale ever, Something Wicked This Way Comes are inevitable, though)

Glad to see they're keeping continuity with Owen's gradual disintegration.

Owen: "He's part of the freak show."
Jack: "Some things never change."

Ow.

(Speaking of comparisons, thoughts of Ianto-as-Xander (or vice versa) comes to mind. Characters who see everything, etc)

...and now we're into Purple Rose of Cairo territory (and that of various preceding films), and the eyeballs roll just a touch...

Oh! I love the abandoned swimming pool location! Anyone got a lead on where that is? (My inner larper is jumping up and down and making unrealistic noises)

Hm, nothing resembling a B-plot going on - unless you count the interactions between Joy and the "mermaid" - which is making the story progression a bit relentless but, well, that's the point, I suppose.

*snark* Shooting the bad guys with Super 8? Well, there's no risk of THAT ever getting developed. */snark*

Aww, don't cry emo-Ianto!

That ending? So out of an RPG I was in a few years ago... *eye-roll*

Nice buildup, not so sure about the follow-through, though - which just goes go show how a few decent eps in a row can make a person raise their standards. If I'd seen this during S1, I'd probably have hooted with delight.

The teaser for Adrift looks interesting. Don't tell me Gwen finally takes the initiative with something! ;)

Is the Castro still operating??? Do they still have the live organ player??? :::sigh::: I dreamed of the Castro for days after watching this ep...

I happened to watch it sandwiched between two movies which, in combination with this, really screwed with my mind... The Illusionist and Everything is Illuminated. The whole day seemed terribly... Weird.

Oh, and the Electro was used in a season one episode for something else... It really threw me upon rewatching.

Aww, don't cry emo-Ianto!

Come on... You *knew* he was gonna. ;-)

Yep, the Castro is still going, and I know they dust off the mighty Wurlitzer occasionally - once a month, and for special events, like "The Wizard of Oz", I think...
