Happy birthday,
iko!

Meanwhile, the fanfic that wouldn't die hit me across the nose with an idea, this morning. Just a tiny little refinement to one of the characters, to better explain why she and her buddy are, um, buddies.
I'm not going to bother providing context for the Fic That Wouldn't Die. Either you've kept up, or you can follow the descendant tags - warning, the silliness quotient goes to 11 on this. I'll be the first to admit that sparing any brainjuice on that project is a waste of time. But sometimes, wastes of time can be fun...
Bearing in mind that this is a fic I don't have any intention of writing, it's just something I constantly tinker with in a manner much like one occasionally tinkers with a box of Legos left over from childhood, I will admit that Andriss, scrubbed free of the implausible, even for a Mary-Sue fic bits, is a bit bland. Moreover, the reasons for keeping her and "Kara" (I really must rename her, again) together were a bit tenuous at best.
This morning, I woke up and realized the following:
- Kara's research reached the human trial stage.
- Kara trusted her lab minions to find volunteers that met her extremely fussy requirements.
- The fussy requirements were secretly overridden by her much more politically pragmatic boss.
- Andriss, a pilot and "independent businesswoman" (find me a ship's captain who isn't part smuggler...), needed money and fit the (altered) requirements - politically conservative, bright not too bright, no family, etc. She is one of four or five volunteers.
- Yes, they really were volunteers. Some seriously good money was offered.
- The trials, naturally, prove a terrible fiasco. Kara is baffled until she learns that the volunteers didn't meet her requirements.
- Andriss and Kara both suffer from comparable degrees of disillusionment.
- Moreover, Andriss' brain chemistry is thrown rather off-kilter, necessitating close medical attention. Manageable, but tricksy.
- Andriss offers Yahnna shelter - and a berth on the Tenebras - in return for necessary medical supervision. The two of 'em have found a lot in common during the lab trial fracas, and so off they go into the wild blue (er, black) yonder.
No, I'm not returning to Andriss what I took away - suffice it to say that she was very, very silly, even by the standards of MS-fic originally bashed out (oh dear god) 25 years ago. I'm just creating a better reason for her to stick by Yahnna, rather than helping her up to a point and then dumping her on the nearest bit of politically neutral ground.
