It was left open-ended actually. The ending was very "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" because the producers honestly didn't know if there was going to be a Season 5 at the time of filming, so they had to rig up an ending that could be read either way.
Airing it December 21st, however, was an appallingly bad move on the Beeb's part. The entire nation had a MAJOR DOWNER right before Xmas - because by the time the eps aired, it had been confirmed that there wouldn't be another season... :-P
Of course, the ficcers have had a marvelous time with that ambiguous ending! :)
