Well, crud.
Bob May, of Lost In Space alumni, and, in my opinion, one of the nicest guys out there, lost his house (and much of the memorabilia through which he earns his living) in the Santa Barbara fire.
Yonks and yonks ago, Alex and I were working a sci-fi convention and Alex was assigned as Bob's "guest liaison". Given that it was Alex's first SF convention, we both rather held our breaths because we had all heard the horror stories about horrible guests and the trials they put the volunteers through.
We'd needn't have worried. Bob and his wife were sweethearts through the entire weekend, totally happy to sit and chat with anyone who stopped by the table and, when the table was quiet, they happily stuffed Alex's head with all sorts of showbiz tales that had him in stitches. Within 48 hours, Alex insisted that Bob be bestowed with the title "The Last Vaudevillian", although I think Bob's taste in jackets might have had something to do with that...
I will, meanwhile, agree with the fact that Bob is one of the nicest fellows you can meet at a sci-fi convention and it's an absolute heart breaker that he - and so many others - have lost their homes in the recent cataclysm.
If Bob ever made you laugh at a convention, drop him a line at webmaster@robot-b9.com and let him know that you're thinking of him, 'kay?
