I finished part one of Blood of the Daleks a couple of days ago, but only just remembered to comment, oops.

I liked it. The story setup is a change from the usual - for once, we've got some witless humans who have no idea who or what the Daleks are - and the production values are generally solid.

However, something in Paul McGann's performance struck me as a bit... wobbly. Was this the first BFA recorded after a long break, perhaps? Or at the very end of a marathon session? McGann's characterization just didn't sound quite as solid and sure as past audios, even as recent as Memory Lane. I'm not saying he was crap or anything, far from it - just not up to his usual form, I thought. He didn't sound like his attention was 100% on what he was doing. I'll listen again and see if I still think that...

The new companion, Lucy, has grown on me, especially as it seems that she's more than some happenstance chav. However, I hope the producers don't endlessly haaaaaul out the mystery of why she got dumped on the Doctor, and I hope that the story behind said mystery turns out to be a bit more substantial than the sort of thing favored by RTD's crowd of late. Hm. Anyways, the character is a big change from Charlie's enthusiastic "What ho, rather!" presence. It'll be interesting to see how Lucy's opinion of the Doctor changes - short and long term - given everything that has been thrown at her. Kudos to the writers for Lucy not immediately trusting the Doctor - I've always had a few suspicions about him perhaps pushing things a bit with people he (or the TARDIS) has eyeballed as potential traveling companions - but further kudos for allowing the character to revise her opinion in the face of evidence.

(As several pals of mine frequently lament, characters that can't/won't learn from their mistakes quickly become very annoying)

Incidentally, don't get me wrong, I like Charlie, I really do, but I see how she's worn thin with many listeners. I'm starting to get a little bored of her, myself, so I'm glad for any change, really.

Good start to the story, with a nice take on the classic post-apocalyptic setting, and with some interesting characters. I'm looking forward to Part 2, whenever that's available. Next month, I hope!
