Y'know, it hasn't occcurred to me to articulate it that clearly, although I suppose I should. Imho, it's mostly the former but with a measurable dollop of the latter, too.
As I've got scrawled in my notes (but I'm not sure if it's going to come up in fic), Jack's an addict at this point. A whole lotta addicts know that their addiction is bad for them, but they still can't bring themselves to quit, y'know? But with the added bonus of Jack's head being literally rewired, in the bargain.
