I've been falling down on the fannish front, lately. I ascribe this to several factors, not the least of which being:

- Still recovering from the massive fannish overdose that is Gallifrey One. It's my favorite convention of the year but, oh boy, does it take a while to dig out from under all the audios and books and toys one brings home. (Just completed the pile o'Prisoner reading. Am moving on to Sapphire & Steel, now)

- Was temporarily waylaid by Life on Mars. I haven't quite finished watching the second season yet, but it's inevitable that I'll do so by the end of the week. As usual, I'm sadly late coming to this fandom, but that's okay by me.

- Bad outbreak of Real-Life-itis at Casa Cthulhu. Those of you on my regular journal know most of the details.

So, in lieu of anything interesting to say, I'm going to comment on the massive DW S4 spoiler that we all know about:

Namely: the return of Rose.

Personally, I wish the creative team had had the chutzpah to kill the character off. Not because I dislike Rose - although I don't think she was a terribly good match for the Tenth Doctor - but because it would have been a spectacularly brave thing to do, and would have made a massive impact. Bless RTD's heart, but I sometimes get the impression that he wants just a wee bit of, y'know, epic grandeur to the stories and what's a good epic without an important death or two?

Yes, yes, I know I'm being trite. I'm tired, stressed-out and my teeth hurt. Be glad that I'm not sharing my Which was the most wasted opportunity: Vislor Turlough or C'rizz? rant.

So, fine. Rose is off in her parallel 'verse with her family miraculously restored, group-hugs for everyone, yadda yadda1 - except for the Doctor who gets a booster shot of Time Lord angst, thus keeping many fan-ficcers happy for the duration.

Despite the far too neat-and-tidy resolution to Rose's story, I accepted it. There wasn't a lot a lot of oomph - the Doctor's been leaving/dumping/running away from companions since tiime immemorial - but, fine, they can't all be Earthshock, I suppose.

Almost as soon as she's gone, the rumors start flying about Rose's return. At first, I ignored all of the noise because it was clearly wishful thinking on the part of the fans. I've been a part of SF fandom for, oh dear god, nearly half my life and I'm used to fans cheering themselves up by hoping for what they want really hard. Hell, I hang around Joss Whedon fans and those guys are the undisputed masters of wishful thinking...

So, yeah, la-la-la, Rose is going to come back some day. Sure she is. Whatever. Pass the Torchwood DVDs.

Then, of course, the Rose 'shippers explode in a puff of collective squee when their wishes come true and Rose's "return" is confirmed. Oh dear.

I don't begrudge the fans their squee, heck no. I'd be struck by lightening if I did.

But, damn, did they have to bring her back? I'm very much hoping that it's all flashbacks or, failing that, the Doctor breaks his own rules and busts his way back into Rose's 'verse, for whatever reason. Cheerfully bringing her back into the Doctor's universe - probably with the flimsiest of plot reasons - would vex me, no end. Did the writers at Marvel suddenly take over the show while I wasn't looking? One of the reasons that mine is a DC comics household is because they try to keep that resurrection habit under control2.

Bringing the character back into the Doctor's vicinity will negate the impact of her departure - what little there was - unless, of course, her next exit is a hell of a lot more memorable. But I think that's too much to hope for. Hear that, guys? Give me an undeniable death - pointless or otherwise - and all is forgiven. I'm sure my good opinion is keeping RTD up at night, right?

Plus, okay, I'll admit that one of the reasons I'm grumbling is because we all know the blasted mad-on Rose 'shippers (a small, but very noisy minority) are going to get all overexcited and be terribly noisy all over the interwebs and, fine, that's allowed, but, damn, something about the Rose 'shippers in particular that sets my teeth on edge. It's probably to do with the fact that I'm generally about the most unromantic sod you're likely to meet (certain notable exceptions aside, you know who you are). I suppose another part of it is that I don't accept the Doctor as a romantic character3. Sentimental, yes. Occasionally flrty... well, that took a while for me to get used to, actually. Even romantic in the sense that the bad-guys generally get what's coming to them and the good guys get something that resembles a happy ending? Sure thing! But flat-out hearts-and-flowers-and-twu-wuv romantic? No. Emphatically no. No matter how the creative crew try to convince me, otherwise. And the Rose 'shippers just won't leave it be.

Fortunately, it's a big internet. All I really need to do is make a nice cup of tea and hit the refresh button... But kvetching about it is sort of fun, too.

This being an open forum and all, and my day looking a bit bleaker than usual, feel free to throw in your $.02

1 - no, I'm not much of a romantic. Sometimes, yes, but not this time.

2 - the Master is different. Why? Looms and mad-ass Time Lord technology. Plus, he's the freakin' Master, for gawsh sakes.

3 - occasional silly thoughts about the Eighth Doctor aside, that is.

Sapphire & Steel reading/audios? I have heard the audios by Big Finish. Are there S&S books/fics?

I'm referring to the audios. I don't know of any books/fics, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're out there...

I heard that while something calling itself "Rose" would show up, it never actually meets the Doctor.

Oooh! Good point.

I think I could tolerate such a situation. Besides, it'll make the MORS' (mad-on Rose 'Shippers) heads explode and that would have a certain entertainment value in itself.

Why yes, my head will indeed explode. Count me as one of the crazies. :)

You're a mad-on Rose 'shipper? Aw, that's okay. Nobody's perfect! ;)

Hey, as I said, I've no issue (well, not much) with Nine/Rose.

But Ten/Rose? Not my thing.

However, I try not to be *too* rabid, so you're safe. :)

End of March, I believe. But I'll be sticking my fingers in my ears (so to speak) until it airs here in the USA. I hope BBCA will follow the example they set with Torchwood and leave us with a lag of only 2 weeks or so...

Yes, LOM!! Love that series. I'm also enjoying the spin-off, but I'm behind a few eps.

And 100% agree on your Rose points. Two seconds after the fade-out for 'Doomsday', credits rolling, I said, "She should have died." Ask [livejournal.com profile] dark_aegis, she'll confirm. I still believe it. Because the moment she didn't die, we've all been expecting her return. And whaddya know, we have it. *eye roll*

I have labeled myself a Doc/Rose shipper(not in the rabid way, because those girls frighten me. Moreso with each passing month) in the past--Nine/Rose was so deliciously dysfunctional--but Rose was not the companion for Ten. The chemistry was not there at all. And I certainly wouldn't apply what I like in fic to the screen! To make any of the happy-ending fic canon would be a show-killer. That's the point of drama! To make the characters suffer!

*nod* I liked Nine and Rose. They were good for each other, in a non-syrupy and quite constructive sort of way.

Ten and Rose? Nothing there. Jolly good chums, yes, and I would have been much happier if it had been played that way. But Rose's puppy-eyedness around Ten - whilst it at least established that she accepted that the Tenth Doctor was the same person as "her" Doctor - just didn't ring true for me, either.

Ah well, there's no pleasing everyone all of the time. ;)

Sadly no. Hence, they should just work on pleasing me. ;)

again proving that we were separated at birth
