Torchwood 2x05 - Adam. Reaction Post

Okay, maybe it's just me but I thought that Adam was, in general, pretty damn dire.
To be fair, I liked the concept behind Adam - a creature that only exists as long as it's remembered by someone. But that was about the only part of the eps I unabashedly liked. Oh, that and Gwen and Rhys wrestling over Gwen's shoe in the opening scene. That was another lovely little moment of those two. Naturally, I'm forced to assume that once again/as usual, they're doomed. But never mind that...
I didn't like the implications being made about the characters as Adam tinkers with them - that all Tosh needs to be happy is, y'know, the right man in her life; that unrequited love will render Owen into a big fluffy puppy (read: dork). Given Owen's little 'memory' at the end, I don't think we can ascribe all of his cynicism to his love life (or lack thereof), y'know? It was insulting at best and downright offensive at worst. Granted, it's not like Adam gave a shit about that sort of fallout, so maybe I'm overreacting a bit.
And, alright, serialkiller!Ianto was worth a few laughs1 but, unfortunately, that's really what it was: laughable. As were most other moments when the characters underwent moments of high drama. I'm as big a fangrrl of every member of that cast as the next squealing maniac but, damn, they all seemed to get scenery stuck in their teeth for this one, Burn Gorman aside, maybe. Jack's flashbacks were particularly awful, I thought... Or maybe this eps did them all a huge disservice? Someone remind me, who directed this one?
Messiah!Jack was a bloody nuisance, too, but I'm getting used to that aspect of him. Oh well, I suppose it's inevitable for an unkillable guy trying to do the right thing to get a bit messianic.
My evil twin texted me five minutes after the show aired in the UK, chortling with glee (yes, you can chortle in a text message) and declaring that this episode required our getting together at some point and giving it the most vicious MST3K treatment possible. I agree with her, wholeheartedly.
Ah well, they can't all be winners. The letdown isn't as bad (or annoying) as the clanging moments in Countrycide or - gosh - 90% of Cyberwoman, so I'm grateful for small mercies...
1 and not a word about the leather gloves, do you hear me? Not. One. Word.

Date: 2008-03-13 06:20 am (UTC)I actually like serial killer Ianto. I thought it was kind of hot, but I'm creepy like that.
(Yeah, *Cyberwoman*... not a fan either.)

But on a sheerly aesthetic level? Yum.
