The Hidden Persuaders, Pocket Watches
Oct. 12th, 2006 10:21 amI have resolved to acquire a pocket watch with no hands on the face. There are some affordable mass-produced pocket watches out there, so I might well pick one up. However, I would have no idea how to take it apart, get the hands off it and - here's the tricky bit - put it back together again. Any aspiring watchmakers out there? Taking it to a jeweler's to have it done would cost me far more than the watch itself, as I'm finding some perfectly adequate ones for, oh, $15 or so - although they've a bit on the small side.
Whyfore the silliness? I'm reading The Burning and Eight's just pulled out the timeless pocketwatch for the Nth time in the series. I like the conceit. Heck, after the tattoo, buying a silly prop to carry around at con is a minor eccentricity. I doubt I'd be the first.
In other news, I just started listening to the third Kaldor City audio "The Hidden Persuaders". I think they've slid into unabashed camp - deliberately, I mean, not accidentally, which is preferable, I suppose. When Uvanov is sounding campy, something's up.
There was a back-and-forth bit between Iago and Uvanov in the first few minutes that was quite amusing, but if that's how they're setting the tone for the rest of the story... I think it's going to turn out to be a pointed contrast, though. We'll see. I've another 45 minutes or so to go, and I'll post a coherent/complete review when done.
For whatever reason, the Magic Bullet dude (there does seem to be only one handling the shipping, out of his house it seems) sent me a copy that had been signed by Tracy Russel, the actor who played Blaise, so that was a pleasant surprise.
