A friend of mine wanted a crash-course introduction to Doctor Who and Torchwood so, in the past 48 hours, I've watched nine episodes of Doctor Who (new series) and three episodes of Torchwood.

My eyes are spinning just a tad - or that might have been the truly substantial amount of plonk put away during the viewing sessions. Things were definitely getting a bit MST3K-ish by the end of the evenings. Still, it was jolly good fun to have a serious wallow of the sort - peps up the ol' fannish blood, so to speak.

Next up, we're going to fill in the gaps on the Ninth Doctor (I gave him rather short shrift, I must admit, with only Rose and Dalek), do a bit more Torchwood and then... start in on the classic series. That's going to take a while!

Fortunately (I suppose) my collection of old school DVDs is a bit scanty so a couple of weekends will suffice for the overview, but at least I've got a couple of the really great stories and, hell, this might be the excuse I've been looking for to pick up a few other titles. The Key to Time box set is becoming increasingly irresistible and, really, I think they're going to take away my fandom membership card if I don't hurry up and buy a copy of The Pyramids of Mars. The fact that I don't have The Talons of Weng Chiang is probably reprehensible, too...

I've been trying to resist that box set too... let alone the copy of the Key to Time book

Is the book something new, or are you referring to the volume published in, hrm, the mid-1980s, I suppose it was...

If the latter, well, the book's okay, but not, y'know, remarkable. Indeed, I think I *might* have two copies of it (I think I got a copy in the huge job-lot of DW books I picked up a few months ago). I'll dig around and, if that's the case, I'll send you the dupe, if you like?

I mean the 1980s book. That would be nice.

Alright, I'll go a-digging, shortly.

Introducing a friend to Doctor Who became my excuse for starting my Doctor Who DVD/VHS collection. Two years ago, The Beginning box set had come out, containing An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, and The Edge of Destruction. That led to getting VHS tapes of stories not yet on DVD and Loose Cannon reconstructions of missing episodes (which are free other than tapes and postage). I already had a number of VHS tapes, but they were a bit random. I'm now up to Season 8 and am taking a break on following up with Season 9 when The Sea Devils is released in June. Then there's the fact that two Pertwee stories were only released in episode format on VHS in the U.K. Which has me considering getting a PAL player with a PAL-NTSC converter. I need help.

I've kept up with new series DVDs and Torchwood, of course.

Phil

D'you know how much they want for some of the classic series DVDs over at Fry's? It's frightful! I only recently found the dosh for "Genesis of the Daleks" and even then, it was only 'cos my VHS tape was wearing out...
