Right. I've finished up with The Boy That Time Forgot by Paul Magrs. My opinion is behind the cut.

I liked almost everything about it. The wonderfully pulp City of Scorpions, and the return of Adric and the supporting characters - even if they didn't have much to do other than be in peril an awful lot.

But I absolutely and utterly disliked how Adric was played. It wasn't what he said - the character motivations, his resentment of the Doctor and the notion that he'd gone batshit insane after living essentially by himself for 500 years made complete sense. His teenage thought processes had calcified and soured - I accept that.

But how he said it? It annoyed the hell out of me. Campy, fey, and irritating. I couldn't help imagining the dialog played in a more restrained manner and, damn, it sounded better. I just couldn't take him seriously at all and that was a shame as it really detracted from the story.

Unsurprisingly, my irritation colored my opinion of the entire story, and that's a shame, as I practically fell out of my chair at the Doctor's incredulous "Adric?"

And, honestly, I called the Adric's going to die retrieving the TARDIS plot point about ten minutes' after his return - and if I can predict an ending, then it's far too obvious. Sigh.

But despite my bitchery, there's still an interesting story, here. I'll probably give it another chance, as I think I'll deal with it a bit more phlegmatically.

I'm not sure how I feel about Thomas Brewster joining the lineup. The Fifth Doctor needs more companions, undeniably so, but given how Erimem got up my nose... well, I'll do my best to just see how it all plays out.

Ironically enough, perhaps, I'm quite keen to see what the Big Finish chaps do with the Fifth Doctor and the Key To Time - and yet another reason why I'm champing at the bit to go to Chicago, as all signs point to much chatting re: ditto.
