[livejournal.com profile] honorarydoctor and I have been talking about re-creating the Voc robots from Robots of Death. With that in mind, I found a bargain-priced copy of the DVD at Fry's and I'm watching it at the moment.

Holy cow! Forget the robots, I want to re-create the miners' gear!

I've not seen the story in at least 20 years, so I'm not surprised that I'd forgotten about the sheer fabulousness of the design. Even the little things, like the makeup on the humans mimicking the painted pattern on the robots' faces (or vice versa). Utterly awesome.

The story's great, of course. I'm going to re-read Corpse Marker tomorrow. Re-listening to the Kaldor City audios is, of course, inevitable.

Kaldor City is worth a relisten even without costuming-related urges. Those guys were not writing these things to be obvious on a first listen, there's a lot to pick up on in hindsight. :-)

I've listened to the series an embarrassing number of times and, yeah, something new is usually found each time. Kaldor City is one of my guilty pleasures - although "Storm Mine" still drives me straight up the wall, for obvious reasons. :)

I was really quite taken by it - more so than I expected, even though I was already pre-disposed to liking it, regardless.

Today, I'm going to try to convince my husband to watch it with me. He's not nearly as keen on Who as I am, but I think he'd really like "Robots of Death"

And, okay, I want to watch it again. :)

I can't wait to see what the restoration team does with it, although I hear that I have at least a year to wait, alas!

Eveything is made of awesome about that episode except the hats.

Oh, I dunno, I thought Uvanov's hat was moderately awesome.

Toos and the rest, though? I agree with you. Especially Toos' sea-horse-frill head ensemble.

Still, I get the impression the designers had a LOT of fun with that story. :)

The design in the story- sets and miners included was fabulous indeed. Still waiting to hear back on some of the Mask leads- but if you're erring to doing the miner costume then it takes the pressure off for a while as I was thinking I ought to finally definivitly get a nice 5th and 6th doctor coat before moving on to another villain/monster. Along the line sof Kaldor city- has anyone read the Chris Boucher Who Novels? I wondered if they were worth picking up as he's one of my fav writers of the classic series (next to Holmes of course).

I'm in no rush, either way. Being utterly without cash for these recreational whatsits gives me a very open-ended schedule!

I've read "Corpse Marker" by Chris Boucher (big surprise) and rather liked it, although from what I've gleaned of reviews, it helps if you're pretty-damn-familiar with "Robots of Death" as it doesn't spend much time giving you context and it's a direct sequel to that story.

"Match of the Day" was v. amusing as it's one of the few times Leela can legitimately be frightfully bloodthirsty.

Looking at his bibliography, I see I've also read "Psi-ence Fiction" which was alright - not particularly sterling, but not "I want those three hours of my life back", either.

I've not read "Last Man Running", another Four-and-Leela romp - I'm seeing a trend here with Boucher's preferred characters. ;)
