(summarized from my other journal, because some of you aren't on that filter.)

Yes, I've heard about the Who-guests at San Diego Comic Con: David Tennant, John Barrowman, Julie Gardner and RTD.

No, I won't be attending - even though house-moving and minor surgical whatsits have been pushed off until August, as such rescheduling doesn't take care of the no-money-for-such-events circumstance. 'Tis a shame, as I had to turn down a gig with the masquerade crew, which would have been a real hoot - ditto volunteering with the CBLDF folks again. Oh well.

So, don't mind me if I spend the latter half of July in a furious sulk. To those of you who are going, I hope you have fun!

I have a fair amount of experience with this particular con, and here's the thing: with fairly "big name" guests like this, you don't have a chance in hell of meeting them. And I'm guessing, at this point, even though Who still has a fairly low profile in the U.S., that Tennant is considered a "big name." This con is attented by upwards of 100,000 people, per day -- it's the biggest media con in the States. Even on a "light" day, it's almost impossible to breathe on the con floor. People are packed in like sardines.

And here's the other thing: if the guest is remotely "big name" -- they'll be signing for about an hour. Two, tops. This isn't like a regular "friendly" con where the guests hang out all weekend and get decent face-time with the fans.... this is hit-and-run, and mainly just so the con people can say, "Look at all these great guests we have." So, 100,000 attendees -- probably at least 15% of which have watched enough Who to want to meet Tennant, even if they aren't Fans Like Us -- and two hours of signing time, with MAYBE a Q&A session in a room that will hold 500 people at most. You do the math.

So, don't fret too much ladies -- unless you have an "in" with somebody at the con, chances are you wouldn't be able to get within a half-mile of the boys. (And Julie.) :)

Oh yeah David will be a big draw since this is his 1st US appearance as is the same for RTD - but it *is* on Sunday the light day... Dr. Who does have a lower profile and I think being that the panel is in Ballroom 20 (which actually holds 4500 people) it'll accomodate the crowds fine (and even if it doesn't I'm not going to be super crushed to miss it-aside from missing any sneaked specials footage, I've found panels on the whole to be less informative over the years, I much prefer meeting/ hanging with fellow fans.) Plus I figure this means Tennant HAS to make a Gallifrey soon and I'd love to get an autograph under those circumstances instead. I think the Beeb took this into account as well hence why there isn't a scheduled autograph session for Tennant or RTD - sounds like there either wasn't the time or they wanted to avoid the onslaught. However I am totally looking forward to getting some pics with the "Doctor Who Set" they are setting up at their booth!
