Potentially Ominous.
Jan. 6th, 2007 09:35 amWell, fuck. The crystal on Alex's "Eighth Doctor" watch, broke. That's the second one to shatter mysteriously, although it's possible that that particular mystery is cat-shaped. Not so, the first one, as it was kept in the sewing room, away from the cats.It had been left alone on my desk with the others, and turned up shattered one day when I brought it out to show someone.
I'm starting to suspect there's something going on with having used superglue to seat the crystals. Both of the busted ones used very thin glass - maybe the glue shrank on the rim and put the glass under tension? The bond endures, but the glass cracks?
Fortunately, all of the other ones look okay and most of them used sturdier glass, too. However, I think I'll take the time to make some little bags for the things and include a note warning recipients that these items do involve glass, not plastic, and shouldn't be handled too roughly. I wish I could have figured out a way to put crowns on all of them, so that the recipient could add a fob. Hmm. I'm going to have to think about that again, I guess...
Now I have to go soak the bezel of Alex's watch in acetone in the hopes of getting the still-seated bits of glass out, or else I'll never be able to fix it. *sigh*
