I'm having one of my hate/love moments with the entire notion of fanfic.

Yes, I'm in the middle of writing a big sillyfic at the moment. No, this isn't a good time for such moments of doubt. Moments like this in the middle of a writing binge risk killing the fic - or having the characters kill each other, which is a risk I'm already battling with, given the characters of The Harkness Supremacy.

If you'd like to recommend some fic that'll nip this awfulness in the bud, please do. There's only so many times I can re-read [livejournal.com profile] moviegrrl's archives. ;)

I'm ashamed to admit that, having watched a couple of the Hornblower films again recently, I'm hankering for some slashy fun from that setting, despite the fact that my Rational Brain keeps asking but where would they find any privacy for that sort of thing? And don't tell me on land/on leave, 'cause Hornblower et al just don't bloody work on land and that's that. I blame the casting of said films for all of this, 'cause it certainly didn't cross my mind while I was reading the books.

I've said that I'll listen to Paul McGann read the phone book, and I will. Just don't ask me to listen to him reading the novel of the telemovie, again. McGann's got a lovely voice, but his valiant attempts at an American accent made me wince.

As mentioned on my regular journal, I still think Scherzo is one of the most brilliant BFAs out there but, damn, the last 15 minutes are a bit cloying, aren't they? Didn't the Doctor and Charley get that whole No, no, let me die for you! I insist! thing out of their system in Neverland? How about Zagreus? Despite that, I still love the story. The Doctor's resentment at being caught flat-footed, emotionally, is such a change from the norm, and listening to him trying to work his way through it, justifying being a shit to Charley and then realizing that that wasn't the smartest idea and, aw hell, this isn't going to neatly resolve itself in 120 minutes (or whatever) is luvly. Although their emotional relationship has pointedly Not Been Mentioned since then - unless I missed something by throwing Minuet In Hell and Creed of the Kromon out of the window within five and seven minutes of starting them, respectively?

Thinking of those aforementioned stories, I still feel bad for C'rizz. The concept, I mean, more than the character. I'm getting frustrated by tantalizing little moments where the character is utterly fab - like in Other Lives, or that Dalek story the name of which eludes me at the moment (gotta run out the door to work in 30 seconds, can't look it up), but then he just flails around in stories like The Next Life - which should have been really important to him - and Something Inside (ditto, although not as much) and I want to shake my fist at the heavens. But I have to go to work now...

Hiya! Lovely seeing you in LA, by the way.

I agree with you 100% about C'rizz. His soliloquy at the end of Terror Firma was intriguing, and I'd love to see him confronting the Doctor some more as in The Next Life.

Oh, if you don't like Paul McGann's attempts at an American accent, then don't listen to him reading The Scorpio Illusion or Apocalypse Watch. He did okay as an American in Mourning Becomes Electra though.

Hello again!!

Terror Firma - that was the name I was trying to remember this morning. Thank you!

*nod* I want to like C'rizz, I really do, but he ends up being a collapsed souffle, more often than not, and I'm getting frustrated.

And "The Next Life" is an very fine story, especially for C'rizz - even allowing for Paul Darrow chewing on the scenery as is his wont.

The most recent, "Memory Lane", was a complete non-starter for all concerned, imho, aside from hearing The Doctor say "The TARDIS has been stolen...by an ice cream man?" in such a wonderfully exasperated tone...
