Right then, I've just finished watching Smith and Jones and the accompanying Confidential.

I liked it a lot more than I was expecting to, mostly because it seems that the advance publicity didn't do Freema Agyeman any good whatsoever. For a start, the pix I saw looked like they knocked about six years off the actress (fangrrl was a bit slow and didn't realize that she'd already seen Freema at the end of the second season) and all that fashionably-clad sultry-posture stuff didn't give me any impression of the character at all and so I feared that there wasn't one to be had. Fortunately, the episode itself handily proved that fear unfounded. I think Martha's going to work out fine - able to hold her own with the Doctor and be something other than Rose Mark II. However, what little we saw of Martha's family is already making me wince and RTD made it clear in the Confidential that we've not seen the last of them, not by a long shot. Ah well.

Martha's family, and the story of the episode, overall, was pure RTD in that it was a bit overdone, a bit derivative but still something that a viewer can enjoy, despite the silliness. All the expected moments were there - hand!pron, running down corridors, technobabble - and I hope they've got it all out of their system, as it's a bit early for the show to become a self-homage.

The production values continue to be quite good - although the big-scale greenscreen stuff had some jarring moments - but I think that might be a fault of my copy of the show. When the episode has fallen off the back of the Internet, they're rarely of full-on broadcast quality - well, not the downloads that I'm willing to wait for.

Of course, there were several moments of squee, and lets not even get started on how Fangrrl's vampire fetish started waving flags and ringing bells at some point. Fortunately, the leather fetish had apparently taken the night off - the Slabs were nothing but a yawnfest, imho, and for that I'm profoundly grateful. My weird little fetishes do not need any help from, y'know, beloved childhood-era icons and such. The It's bigger on the inside moment was priceless...

The Doctor's blue suit is growing on me, but I still prefer the ol' pinstripe. Call me old fashioned, I suppose. At least, I'm not one of the horde of Doctor/Rose 'shippers who are lamenting, well, anything that isn't Doctor/Rose. Yes, yes, Rose was something special - but she was also one of many. Go talk to Sarah Jane Smith if this fact seems to have eluded you, kiddies.

I'm still chewing on the meatier bits of the show being back on the air, and it'll probably require another viewing before I can articulate it properly. Suffice to say that I've not been disappointed (whew!), and roll on next Saturday night!

Liked the episode but it wasn't entirely 1st class - maybe still getting used to no Rose.

Here are some Dr Who related vids to pass the time while this new companion beds in.
