I just watched Gridlock and, honestly, I'm inclined to watch it again because my initial reaction is: ten minutes of good content wrapped up in thirty minutes of meh, and that's a bit of a bummer. The episode struck me as a pastiche of a half a dozen different ideas that had RTD's attention at the time of writing, which he somehow thought might all work en ensemble - and not all of them did.

As I say, I'm willing to watch it again before setting my opinion in stone. More thoughts as they occur to me.

However, I totally need an icon of the Doctor with kittens, 'cause, you know, that's even cuter than John Barrowman with a puppy.

Next week: Daleks in New York. I can deal with that but, oh god, does this mean 40 minutes of watching well-meaning Brits doing mangled American accents?

As someone who lives and works in the New York area, the accents in the teaser made me cringe. My reaction: "It's worse than Ewan McGregor in Black Hawk Down."

God bless the English and American acting communities, but they shouldn't try each other's accents. It rarely works well... *sigh*

I liked it. Brannigan's line of blarney made me laugh pretty much every time he was onscreen. You've got to love an Irish cat in a flying helmet. Then of course there was the huge foreshadowing of what's to come later in the season, so that was cool.

Plus, the most unexpected monster return on Doctor Who yet. I jumped out of my seat, and Tara still doesn't know what that's all about.

As for the next episode, I'll point out here that the last time they had Americans in the show, they were played by actual Americans, so that any awful accents were entirely their own. Given that I've heard some truly terrible faux-Brooklyn accents in US shows (heck, I've heard some unbelievable "Noo Yawk" accents in New York itself), I'd warn against possibly perceiving an American accent as bad just because it's a British show.

Yeah, well, Brannigan was, of course, one of the bits I liked, because I'm a sucker for the feline species.

Anyways, as I said, I'm willing to watch it again, as I'm not sure I'm giving it enough credit, y'know? It probably didn't help that I was doing crafty bits for most of it and so it only had about half of my attention for most of the eps...

re: monsters' return, I'm glad you managed to avoid that spoiler. Someone blew it to me a couple of weeks ago and I grumbled for hours...

I liked Gridlock. Bits of it took a little thought, but I don't see the holes complained about in particular by a number of posters over on OG. And Ardol O'Hanlon was terrific.

I liked *bits* of it, taken by themselves - the virus wiping out the planet in 7 minutes, Brannigan, the endless journey that was intended to save folks, and the creatures preying on said journey, but put all together? It just didn't gel for me.

And I thought Tennant laid it on a bit thick - even for the Doctor - and that grated on me, some.

I could give a damn about continuity holes. Fans who expect Doctor Who, of all things, to maintain a consistent continuity are asking for the moon, imho. ;)

But, as I say, I'm willing to watch it again. I was a bit preoccupied during the screening, so maybe I'm not giving it a fair chance.
