Oh, thank you very fucking much RTD et al, for co-opting the old school theme in The Sound of Drums. I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't succumbed to the temptation to watch The Keeper of Traken immediately afterwards - then it all became painfully apparent. Bloody hell!

Short version: The Sound of Drums was made of awesome.

The long version: I've noticed a lot of love/hate reactions to TSOD. I'm willing to put money down on the theory that those who are hating it are new-school fans, whereas those folks who are rolling around shrieking with laughter are old-school fans.

Newsflash, kids: The Master is supposed to be over the top. Deal with it. If you can't, you're watching the wrong show.

I, for one, completely dig Harold Saxon and I don't mind the slightly-zany insanity one jot. If you're going to be a Time Lord bent on galactic domination, you're probably crazy - very crazy, in fact. I loved every bit it of, especially the bits that clearly had the slashficcers running for their keyboards.

The jellybaby moment almost killed me. Fanwank, yes, but hilarious.

I really, really loved the dialogue between the Master and the Doctor via celphone. It's a challenge to build tension between two characters who aren't sharing the screen, but the crew really pulled it off. I was climbing the walls and pretty much squeeing uncontrollaby, at that point.

And, oh dear god, am I happy that the Master (apparently) isn't the Doctor's brother. Whew. That would have been too fanwanky.

Whilst Martha, once again, didn't have much to do I very much appreciated the "It's all your fault!" moment. You tell 'im!

The club-music break at the very end of the eps was a bit jarring but fuckit, I forgive 'em. In fact I, er, kinda liked the tune. Is it downloadable? Never mind. Got it.

I'd say more, but my head is full of Jack/Master/Ten slash, sorry 'bout that. I'm only human, you know...

Needless to say, I intend to make a Saxon campaign shirt or two... ;)

Edited to add: okay, the riff is from the theme tune, period, but it just seemed that much more obvious with the old-school tune.

The amount of subtext in Doctor Who is pretty impressive. Torchwood is blatant about the sex, but I found that the bits that got the fans most worked up was the subtext-y bits (stopwatch, anyone?). Well, that and the whole Ianto-snogfest.

It's the subtext that the fans mine for every grain of porny goodness.

As several someones have mentioned here and there on the web, there's nothing subtle in the dynamic between The Master and The Doctor. I'm inclined to agree (and dear gods, it's good silly fun)

And, on a tangent, whilst I cheered the Jack/Ianto snogfest moment in the show, just because I love me the tasty boys, the fact of the relationhip annoyed the hell out of me because it, y'know, came out of left field. Ianto goes from all emo and "I want you to suffer" etc, etc, to flirting over the DB of a co-worker with the boss? WTF? That's some pretty serious rebound!

I created my own meta to explain it, but that doesn't negate the fact that that particular relationship was symptomatic of how Torchwood lurched along without any coherent theme or continuity and I"m going to stop now before I start ranting...
