The Last Time Lord - Initial Reaction

Okay...
I liked some aspects - the validation of faith as a theme of the season, Martha leaving on her own terms and telling the Doctor why, Martha actually being useful and non-emo, the Master's death1, the Doctor's reaction to same (which completely fuckin' gutted me), redemption, and why Jack returned to Torchwood2
Of course, there were bits I didn't like. Some bits had me rolling my eyes and groaning come on!. RTD's fascination with weird CGI beasties, the too messianic playing-out of faith as the season's theme (geezus, why not give him a halo and wings while you're at it?), and the face of what?? *grumble* I mean, it's kind of cool, in a way, but rpg!Jack's vanity is not happy about it...
And, please, oh please, let's have Elizabeth Moen playing the Master next season. Please? I want this because a) I've always been a part of the Time Lords can choose their gender school and b) Lucy was so beautifully, beautifully broken by the end of the episode that she'd clearly make a wonderfully nihilistic and insane-beyond-your-sad-comprehension-of-the-term Master. That girl is gone, daddy, gone - and I love it. (Stop being jealous, Trish). Honestly, I think that this was planned by the Master all along, heh - and talk about raising narcissism to new heights!
In other news, my utterly shameless Mary Sue character is having a fine time discussing (er, that's it, discussing) boot fetishism with rpg!Jack, for which I blame the local branch of the Discount Shoe Warehouse, entirely. Man, those boots were gorgeous and if it wasn't for a serious manufacturing defect in the only pair they had in my size... *mutter* But that's another subject entirely...
More thoughts when I've seen the eps again. For the moment, I don't think it was as good as The Sound of Drums but, truth is, that was a hell of an episode to follow, y'know?
PS. Have already laid dibs on the lj comm
jackinajar
PPS. And once again, the whole effin' I'm sorry thing came up. Must think on this more, particularly in the light of that final1 convo between the Doctor and the Master...
1 - so-called. Btw, I need a good screencap of that ring. You can guess why.
2 - dude. Completely called that with rpg!jack, in the AU-ish thing he has going on with
genius_mind. Lo, I am rife with smugness.

Yeah, it kinda grated on me, too. Why not just keep piling on the extreme-old-age look, y'know? *sigh* RTD will have these little weaknesses...

Date: 2007-07-01 06:47 pm (UTC)This ep was proof of the danger of spoilers for me as well - having read about a lot of what happens beforehand, I watched with trepidation only to discover it played out much better than anticipated with spoiler knowledge. I enjoyed it, and like you I want to see Lucy Master. :-)
(And if you want to look, I have minireviews/rankings of series 3 here.)

Date: 2007-07-01 10:32 pm (UTC)It was pretty clear to me that his "death" was all a set up, but it didn't occur to me that he might inhabit *Lucy*... That would be so freakin' AWESOME!
Damn it! I had a really, really good scan of that ring and now I can't find it! It was from one of the groups - A scan of the Radio Times cover, I think... Augh!

Of course, watch those red fingernails be one big red herring... *grins*
I've heard about that Radio Times - I really hope someone scans it!
