I'm posting this at the request of another LJer, Kathy Routliffe. Enjoy.

As you may or may not know, the website Television Without Pity , also known as TWoP, has recently decided to cease recapping the BBC show Doctor Who, which is aired by the SciFi Channel in the U.S. and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Canada. The announcement, made mere days before the show's third season was due to be broadcast and recapped in the United States, has disappointed a large portion of the TWoP and Doctor Who communities, particularly those who cherished the funny, erudite and often-moving recaps by Austin-based writer Jacob Clifton.
Why are we visiting you folks here with the news? Should you care? We think so.
We are fans and friends of Television Without Pity. We support the site's mission; to provide intelligent insight and discussion on a wide range of television programs. We continue to hope that its corporate buyout by BRAVO last March provides site operators the chance to expand show coverage. But we don't think the decision to cancel Doctor Who recaps fits with that mission, so we are asking both TWoP and BRAVO officials to bring the recaps back.
That's why we've launched our campaign - one that's polite, positive and passionate - to tell our friends at TWoP and BRAVO that we all can win by doing that. Specifically, we want to convince them that letting Doctor Who recaps resume is a far better way to enhance TWoP's and BRAVO's reputations than to end them. We hope to make them understand that we who watch the show and want the recaps back are part of a network of people who count when it comes to the artistic, demographic, and even economic health of television programming.
And that's where you come in.
We think that you are part of our network. The reasons are many. Any - or all - of them could fit you, in your community here: you may be fellow Doctor Who fans; you may love another science fiction show as much as we love Doctor Who (and it's a good bet that we've probably watched, and liked, your show); you may be a fan of good TV, good TV commentary, and Television Without Pity.
More importantly, we think you understand a) that what happens to one of us affects us all; b) that we all have a stake in maintaining quality television and lively television commentary and c) that it's possible to win. And we think you may want to join our ranks and help us win.

Date: 2007-07-27 09:10 pm (UTC)I actually hadn't checekd out TWoP to read the new recaps and am bummed to find out they're not doing them.
I guess I'm glad there's a campaign but I wonder if it might not be more cost-effective for everyone to pitch in a buck and pay Jacob to write for us directly. Although I guess that might breach his contract, or something.
