A friend just pointed out to me that not only is John Barrowman not making it to Torchsong Chicago, but neither is Kai Owen. And the organizers are standing by the (admittedly published since Day 1) policy of no refunds.

*sighs*

If there's not a riot at their registration desk, I'll be surprised.

I feel terrible for the fans who are losing out because of this. I know that conventions have a certain element of a crapshoot re: appearances but most conventions don't squeeze the attendees for as much dosh as this one has. I haven't seen such bare-faced money grubbing since the days of Creation's Star Trek events.

As <lj user="bovil"> and others have mentioned, the variety of programming - and guests - is one of the myriad reasons that fan-run cons rock.

Oh. Dear.

When Torchsong Chicago was first announced, I honestly thought pretty hard about finding the dosh for going. But I already one have one Chicago convention and financies have, in my house, collapsed even further so it became a moot point.

I hate to say it, but I'm kinda relieved that I didn't go the trouble. The con is not cheap and hearing that the GOH - John Barrowman - can't make it over there in person breaks my heart for the folks who have paid through the nose to attend.

Yes, I know he's going to teleconference in, and the other guests will still be appearing, but Barrowman was definitely the star attraction.

Ah well, maybe next year.

I just hope the con-chair had some sort of event insurance...
