Prompted by a a comment made elsewhere, it occurs to me to do a quick update to my BFA Doctor Who reccs list.

Rather than editing that post - and because I'm in a bit of a tizzy, today - I'm just going to mention the stories released over the past year that I think are worth listening to:

Cut for politeness' sake - minor spoilers )

I suppose my DW-fangirl union card is at risk but, honestly, I thought Voyage of the Damned was somewhat awful.

There were some amusing moments, yes, but not enough to save it.

My opinion might have been sweeter had I watched this at the right time and in the right mood - ie, shiftfaced drunk on Christmas afternoon.

(and RTD's running out of London landmarks to threaten, don't you think?)
fangrrl_squees: (dw - theme)
...with the rest of the world and watching Voyage of the Damned. As I'm only 45 seconds in at this point, all I can say is: Stop messing with my theme tune, dammit!

*ahem*

Sorry. I don't cope well with changes to That Show.

Edit: Um, what's with all the fat jokes?

Oh! It's just The Poseidon Adventure, redux. I see. But with killer robots. RTD does love using 'em, doesn't he?

Tomorrow, my don't steal stuff off the Internet will undergo some serious testing.

I know, I know. Not much point in try to adopt a certain policy if it's only going to collapse at the first (well, second) sign of strain. I've kept my promises re: Torchwood, but Doctor Who is an order of magnitude more severe, temptation-wise.

When will BBCA be showing S4?

(better yet, how quickly will Auntie Beeb be churning out the DVDs in the UK? Some things are worth the exchange rate...)

Right then, just some quick thoughts on the latest BFA DW story, Bride of Peladon by Barnaby Edwards (Fifth Doctor, Peri, Erimem)

Spoilers, ahoy! )

SQUEEEEE!

Proof that I am a complete and utter fangirl. Even more so than you might have anticipated.

Like proof was needed. ;)

For what it's worth, I really enjoyed the brunch and, damn, I wish I'd made the line for 2009. Oh well, maybe 2010. (I'll quit going to Gallifrey two years after the convention is over.)

I'm cheerfully full of gin and wine at the moment and, following a conversation with my dad regarding what's going right with New Who and why he should be watching it (he merely dipped his toes in during bits of S1, and managed to see Dalek, thank Whomever) I got into a big long discourse about why the fandom and the writers/crew are a big part of why I remain in the fandom and it was... well, it fun and cheerful and passionate - several things I've not been, recently... So passionate, in fact, that the waiter wondered what the hell I was going on about when he passed by the table. Granted, this was after the second martini and I can be passionate about a whole range of subjects at that point in an evening...

But, er, yes, more thoughts on that when cheerfully sober - whenever that happens to be.

I've been falling down on the fannish front, lately. I ascribe this to several factors, not the least of which being:

- Still recovering from the massive fannish overdose that is Gallifrey One. It's my favorite convention of the year but, oh boy, does it take a while to dig out from under all the audios and books and toys one brings home. (Just completed the pile o'Prisoner reading. Am moving on to Sapphire & Steel, now)

- Was temporarily waylaid by Life on Mars. I haven't quite finished watching the second season yet, but it's inevitable that I'll do so by the end of the week. As usual, I'm sadly late coming to this fandom, but that's okay by me.

- Bad outbreak of Real-Life-itis at Casa Cthulhu. Those of you on my regular journal know most of the details.

So, in lieu of anything interesting to say, I'm going to comment on the massive DW S4 spoiler that we all know about: But in case you don't, here's a cut tag )

Oh.

My.

God.

I did not just hear the Eighth Doctor say "You might think that, I couldn't possibly comment" in the third track of Max Warp, did I?

Yes, I bloody did. Jesus Motherf*cking Christ!

*ahem*

I'm fine. Really. Stellar, in fact. Please excuse me for a moment...

*fans self*

(this post brought to you by yet another of fangrrl's mad fandoms, namely House of Cards. I used to make my Vampire players watch it once a year to see how the game should be played.)

Re: the new Doctor Who comic from IDW, which the husband just brought home after his weekly trip to the comic book store.

Like the writing. Hate the art. Like, really, really hate it. It's too trendy and a bit too cartoony. Yes, really.

Cartoon-y I can accept, indeed, I expected it, but something in the overall style is summoning up everything I dislike about Peter Cheung, and that's not good. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Peter Cheung fan, but I also acknowledge that some aspects of his stylel also drive me bonkers. And ridiculously trendy lines on the clothing. Yes, yes, yes, I know that's going to happen in any comic book - one need only cast one's eyes over the husband's Justice League Europe collection for confirmation of that - but a certain amount of (for want of a better word) moderation would be appreciated.

Or maybe I'm just another fuddy-duddy complaining about how comics have gone to hell since Transmetropolitan and Preacher came to an end...

I will, however, repeat myself in that the writing (Gary Russel, at the mo') is spot-on. The story was a bit simple but as it's a first-issue kickoff sort of thing, I didn't expect anything more than that.

I suppose it would help if I knew the target demographic for the title. In all likelihood, I'm ten years and two tax brackets away from it...

I'm really enjoying the I, Davros series - good writing, fab talent, solid production values, etc, etc. Everything that makes a BFA worth listening to.

But did Davros have to have mommy issues? Methinks someone clung a little too much to the Psychopath 101 primer.

(and guys, I love you. But Calcula? Why not call her Cruella DeVille and have done with it?)

I promise coherent whittering when I've finished the run.

Whilst cleaning up the computer room, I stumbled across a couple of BFAs that, for some damfool reason, I'd not ripped to iTunes: I.D./Frantic Calls, Frozen Time and Renaissance of the Daleks. 'tis like a belated Xmas present!

And I received The Girl Who Never Was and the two subscriber-bonus BFAs - Return to the Web Planet and Return of the Daleks - in the mail, yesterday.

That's a lot of listening material. I'll see y'all in a few days.

PS. Of course, I'll be listening to The Girl Who Never Was, first. ;)
fangrrl_squees: (jm - UNIT)
Thanks to my Evil Twin for the link.

UNIT back in force for season four

I just started listening to the Excelis series (Excelis Dawns by Paul Magrs) and, oh dear, it's hilarious.

I say oh dear because I wasn't quite expecting comedy, you see, and, at first, I thought "Oh god, am I not listening to this properly?" but, nope, I don't think it's me.

(I just hope it's all intentional, y'know? Nothing more crushing than discovering you've inadvertantly written a comedy, I'm guessing)

I have since realized, upon closer reading of the back cover, that it couldn't be a serious tale, not with Iris Wildthyme in it, but I wasn't quite prepared for the sheer manic giggling it provoked whilst I rode the train the other day. It's practically a panto - and I'm only about 15 minutes into the thing.

Right then, now that my thresholds recalibrated. I'm sure I'll enjoy the rest.

The story has a bonus in that it's letting me give Iris another chance. Leavened with the presence of other strong characters, I think I might find her a bit more palatable than I have previously. I love her to bits in the EDAs, mind you, so I'm generally inclined to enjoy the character. But Iris At Large was a bit...much.

I'm off to the big bad city and will be listening to the rest of the audio on the way. ;)

Time Crash.

Made of squee.

Made of cheerfully irreverent, poking-fun-at-ourselves happysquee, no less.

I'll forgive Steven Moffat for scaring the pants off me in Blink1, now.

Vaguely spoilerish squee-ings )

*AHEM*

So, what's this about the News of the World saying that John Simm's been tapped as the eleventh Doctor, then?

Not that I don't think he'd be ohmigodfabulous and all - because he would - but I must admit that I have to take all DW gossip received at 2:20AM local time (yes, I'm up far too late) with a grain of salt. (and maddesperatefangirlyhope)

*whistles artlessly*

Meanwhile... Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] subtly_modded! May your natal anniversary be full of whatever debaucheries you desire!

Absolution arrived in the mail, yesterday, so - despite the fact that it was past midnight and I was well into my cups, I immediately copied it to my iPod so that I could listen to it today.

Unfortunately, I was sewing up a corset as I listened, so I'll admit that it wasn't getting 100% of my attenion - further reviews upon further listening.

But for now, an initial opinion: Major Spoilers )
fangrrl_squees: (Default)
Right then. I've listened to the third story in the new B7 audios - Liberator and the latest Doctor Who offering from BFA, 100

Liberator - some spoilers )

100 - again, spoilers )

I just got me a copy of The Gallifrey Chronicles (er, the correct book, this time, not the 1980s non-fic thing by John Peel, oops) for far less than the $1801 wanted by a US seller. Thank heavens for Ebay International.

1 - Yes. $180 - for a used copy. And someone else was asking $260 for a new copy. Geeze, louise, guys. I can get Lungbarrow for less. Not that I have to
fangrrl_squees: (Default)
Alright, so I just finished War of the Daleks, the EDA which, if I recall correctly, made the entire Internet1 melt down.

Cut for spoilery - just in case )

1 - or at least the DW Usenet newsgroup, a not-insignificant part of the 'net, at the time
fangrrl_squees: (pmg - eighth doctor)
As you might already know, I've embarked on reading the EDAs, more or less in order.

Thoughts, Such As They Are )

Meanwhile, d'oh! Guess who found out there are two books entitled The Gallifrey Chronicles and promptly bought the wrong one? Fortunately, it didn't cost too much and it's an okay book, as such things go. I'm currently trying to find a copy of the Lance Parkin novel for less than $180 (the cheapest price I could find outside of resorting to an auction) but I'm not optimistic. I know, I know, the novel apparently sucks, but it's the only one of the run I don't have and you know what us SF geeks are like when it comes to wanting a complete set of things...

(In other news, I finally got my Seal of Rassilon tattoo touched up (the tattoo is nearly eight years' old). It looks great, but I really hope this is the last touch-up for a while, 'cause, ouch, it hurt!)
