A bowtie, huh?

(If you're dying to know, here's a picture - tis posted by the Beeb, so I guess it's official)

Not my usual cup of tea, but I could learn to like it.

In general, though, I'm all for the geeky-professor look. It's a little anachronistic, but not painfully so - it looks like he's wearing some well-washed (black) jeans with the tweedy jacket and they offset each other quite well.

I wonder if those boots are a part of the costume, too? Kinda hope so, to be honest.

Yeah, I think I could learn to like it.

PS. Karen/Amy still looks twelve. A very cute and adorable twelve, but twelve. Yes, I know I'm being bloody-minded. I will also concede that her hair is gorgeous.

Oh thanks so much for this!!! I have to agree, I'm giving Matt a chance now, they did a really good job with costuming, I'm glad they're kinda going with the feel of old who...

Yeah, I gotta admit, the bow tie smacks of "trying too hard to be geeky," but I'm willing to give Moff the benefit of the doubt, and wait to see it all "in action."

And yeah, Karen Gillian looks like she should be playing Ginny Weasley... I'm actually slightly surprised she got cast, as her general coloring is SO close to Catherine Tate's, and I'd think the Moff would want to go for more of a change-up. But my goodness sakes, she is a pretty young lady.

The way the costume came together in my head is that the character doesn't quite realize that it's not entirely age-appropriate for him. He's 800-something years old and newly regenerated. Who's to say he didn't quite notice that he's dressed aptly for someone twice his (apparent) age?

And I get a bit of 'unhip professor trying desperately to be not so unhip' - hence the boots and the jeans with the tweed.

re: Karen... well... one could make a host of speculations, but one won't. However, I'm warming up to her as it occurs to me that if, say, Donna ended up running around with an (apparently) 20something Time Lord, she'd slap his face clean off his head the first time he went off on an (inevitable, if inadvertant) patronizing lecture.

It is a nice slide along the clothing spectrum from the (much beloved, by me at least) yob of Nine, to the slightly wigged out Carnaby Street throwback of Ten to something that could still walk the streets without someone going "Hey, that wanker's got a piece of celery in his two-toned Community Theater Interpretation of an Edwardian Gentleman/Cricketer Suit Jacket!" of Five. (Which, by the way, I love. Just sayin'.)

Also, it reminds me of the late, great U.S. Senator Paul Simon, who was more at home with a bow tie than George Will is, or will ever be. Heh.

I never thought of Ten as "Carnaby Street", but maybe we have different ideas of what that means. ;)

As I mentioned in a comment, above, I've worked it out in my own head that Eleven doesn't quite realize that he's wearing a jacket more suited for someone twice his (apparent) age. It's a pitfall of *looking* 20something at 800+ ;)

FWIW, I'll never hear a word against Peter Davison's costume. Before I gave up the whole Femmy-Doctor idea for good, the next one on my list was an Edwardian strolling ensemble, using that costume as the basis for the design. I loved Five's gear.

Heh. I think it's just that I was never a fan of either beige or orange, which is what Five's uniform registered as to me. Thank god he was a Doctor I liked, as opposed to, say, Six, whose personality I admired as much as I admired his clothing.

I remember looking at Carnaby Street fashions back when they were all all the rage - and have now dated myself far too conclusively - and Ten definitely rang that bell for me. I will defer to you, however, because I suspect you have a better feel for clothing, with your skills, than I do. Luckily, whatever era Ten's clothing referenced, he wore it well and I enjoyed it greatly.

There are other photos if you go back, but they are actually spoilery. I however am very happy....

Oh, those are great pix! And, uh, YES! on the spoilers. I'm quite pleased, actually - maybe the mystery will be cleared up. Will have to build a bunker against the fan-reaction though, I'm sure...

What with the Ashes and Who pics being made available all day, you can imagine how much work I haven't done ;)

The costume is growing on me. I was hooing for a grab-you-at-galnce silouette like Pertwee and Baker. I always vote for a good frock but I guess that's the cliche nowadays- maybe Doctor 12 will bring that back. Still it has nice little nods in it to Two, Four, Seven and Nine and in arrangement, Ten.

Nailing those fabrics once we get even better close ups will be tricky - especially the shirt. I'm more curious how he gets the clothes... does he do a TARDIS wardrobe hunt or will he get them on the go- stealing or getting hand me downs from a college professor/student???

I've a coworker who's into the Western/cowboy thing and he backs up my initial hunch that Smith's shirt is very much like a vintage-style C&W type shirt - at least based on the pattern and what we can see of the cut.

I've seen that fabric pattern before (the closely-printed S-curve) on shirts if not on the bolt, and whilst I'm not sure if I could find fabric to match, I wouldn't be surprised if some dedicated hunting around vintage e-tailers might find some very-close matches.

I don't know enough about tweed to know what - if anything - is distinctive about the fabric in the jacket...

And, yeah, I'm curious as to the story of that costume's acquisition, too! ;)

Oh, I dunno. I know some pretty resourceful folks. Any day know, I expect to see a post on [livejournal.com profile] dw_cosplay along the lines of "I've got a bolt of the tweed, who wants yardage?" :)
